The Adelante Team
RAY KAUFMAN - Wine maker
I have had a diverse life. In addition to my winemaking career of now 40 years, including 23 vintages at Laurel Glen Vineyard, I was a credentialed teacher, lived in Asia, sailed the South China Sea and South Pacific, and developed a California wine export company that shipped over 50 wineries to 15 countries around the world. Along the way I had the opportunity to make wine in Argentina, discovered Malbec, and never left! I hope to share my connection with Argentina and Malbec with you.
Just as when I first came to the Sonoma Valley over 40 years ago, there is a new generation of vintners in Mendoza determined to make world class wines. When presented with the opportunity to be part of this quality revolution taking place, I couldn’t turn away. I wanted to share my experience as a winemaker in California with my colleagues in Mendoza. I welcomed the challenge of learning a different terroir along with working in a different culture. What part of Mendoza’s traditional winemaking and grape growing made sense to incorporate? Would it be possible to continue with native yeast fermentation? Would spontaneous malolactic fermentation be possible? What style of wine fit our vineyard? Could we revitalize our old vineyard to be able to farm organically?
It has taken many years, but we have been able to answer these questions. ADELANTE!
MARCOS PIZARRO -– Winery enologist
Marcos is the winemaker at the family-owned Bodega Gimenez Riili (https://bodegagimenezriili.com/ ), where Adelante is fermented, aged, and bottled. The winery is equipped with the latest harvest technology, temperature control systems, stainless steel tanks and a selection of French oak barrels. Graduate in enology from Juan Agustin Maza University in Mendoza, Marcos is a native of the Uco Valley. His vast experience and knowledge of Malbec is an asset as we deal with the variations of each vintage.
PEDRO NIEVAS – Farmer
Pedro has taken care of vineyards his whole life. He lives with his family at Don Eugenio farm and maintains the grounds and vineyard.
All the vineyard work and harvesting is done by hand with an emphasis quality over quantity.
DIEGO ROSSO AND ALBERTO CORTI: Agronomists
Diego's family has long been involved in Mendoza agriculture. Diego was the vineyard manager at the start-up of Achaval-Ferrer, a brand that helped define Argentine Malbec on the world stage. Diego’s cousin Alberto is a long-time vineyard consultant with expertise in La Consulta and old vines. Diego and Alberto helped revitalize the vineyard, understanding each section and focusing on proper yields. Our next step is assessing each vine, replanting using our own clone, and completing the transition to an organic vineyard.
CARLOS CONALBI: Business manager
Born into a Mendoza family with deep roots in agriculture and education in the province, Carlos was raised around vineyards and wines. Educated at the law school of the National University of Cuyo and the University of California, Davis, Carlos coordinates our business activities in Mendoza. As well as a respected wine business consultant, he is an expert on the legal aspects of vineyards and wineries.
